Why do you dress as handmaids?
Our uniforms serve as a visual warning that, if we do not change the direction of this Administration, a dystopian future like the one depicted in The Handmaid's Tale, by Margaret Atwood, will become our reality.
Why do you stand and walk in silence?
Handmaids are silent because silence is what oppression looks like — and also what resistance looks like when symbolism speaks louder than words. We remain stoic in the face of injustice. Our silence is intentional, symbolic, and strategic. It reflects the chilling reality that, when our rights are stripped away, our voices are silenced. It is a warning, not a performance. Our silence makes the symbolism louder than any chant could.
Our silence honors the gravity of the issues we support, including reproductive freedom, the rule of law, due process for all, and basic human dignity. It invites observers to reflect. It is powerful in part because it cannot be argued with -- there is no shouting match, no slogans to debate. Our opponents cannot disrupt or drown out our silence.
Who is your intended audience?
YOU! You are the audience we are looking to reach. In particular, we'd like to reach parents, holding tightly to their kids, fighting against the people who are okay with denying them resources and support in school; survivors of domestic and/or sexual violence; members of the LGBTQIA+ community; folks from a whole host of age groups, from youths to seniors; those who've watched the show or read the book; those who want to learn more; and, those who don't yet know what we stand for who would like to understand the our purpose for donning the uniform.
Where do you get your uniforms?
Handmaids' uniforms are available from a variety of sources. While we suggest supporting small business retailers such as those found on Etsy, they may also be purchased from online stores. You are also welcome to make your own! Want to join us at a protest but don't have the uniform? Wear a red dress or shirt along with a white hat and join us!
Do you sell any merchandise or make a profit?
No. The Handmaids of MN is a not-for-profit organization and does not sell anything. As a group, we do not support profiting from injustices inflicted upon others.
Can I take a picture with you?
Yes! We love meeting new friends and will generally be happy to take a photo with you. If you would like to share your photos with us, please feel free to tag us on social media and add the #HandmaidsInAction tag.
Will you hold my protest sign or wear my pin/sticker?
Thanks for wanting to include us in your messaging; however, the Handmaids of MN will neither hold your sign nor alter our uniforms in any way.
